I’ve been involved with crafting my fair share of vision and mission statements over the years.
They usually sounded impressive. Vaguely inspirational. Maybe even like something a very successful company should say.
But when the time came to get buy-in and bring them to life, it was like doing CPR on a dead log.
The problem?
- They could belong to any company.
- In any city.
- Doing any kind of work.
They’re perfectly polished and completely forgettable.
My Breakthrough Moment
Things finally clicked when I started crafting the vision and mission for Law Business Support.
This time, I didn’t start with industry trends—and completely ignored “what leaders in my industry say.”
I asked myself one question:
What have I always been drawn to—even when nobody was watching?
The answer was clear: creating, implementing and optimizing systems and processes.
(I know, I know—not everyone’s idea of a good time. But for me? Catnip.)
I didn’t just “find a niche.”
I followed the thread of what has always made my brain light up—things I had a real knack for and loved doing—and then built a business that lets me play in that sandbox every day.
It’s like:
“Here’s the game I was born to play. Let me build the scoreboard.”
The vision reflects what matters most to me.
The mission plays directly to my strengths—what I’m wired to do.
And breathing life into it was as natural as… well, breathing.
Here’s the Trick
Figure out what comes naturally—because it’s part of your DNA—and then lean into it.
Build your vision around what matters most to your authentic self.
Build your mission around your strengths and what makes you tick.
That’s it. That’s the shift.
Most visions are generic because they’re based on what sounds impressive.
Most missions are uninspiring because they’re written to please everyone.
But when you flip the script—and build from the inside out—your firm becomes more:
- Authentic
- Distinctive
- Magnetic
- And way more energizing to lead
You’re not constantly trying to morph into something else.
You’re expanding into what you naturally do best.
For Law Firms, This Is a Superpower
In firms with multiple partners, this approach becomes even more powerful.
Instead of trying to force alignment around corporate-speak, you can ask:
- What’s in our DNA?
- How do we pass on our genes—build a firm around the best of what the individual leaders bring to the mix?
- What makes this partnership worth building?
Because here’s the secret:
Your real edge isn’t your practice areas, your pricing, or where you choose to have your offices.
It’s the mix of humans who’ve chosen to build something together.
That’s the magic.
That’s what no competitor can copy.

Ready to Revisit Yours?
So if your vision and mission are still living in the beige zone—or if they haven’t been touched since the firm’s founding—here’s a better place to start:
- What’s in your DNA?
- What kind of work actually lights you up?
- What kind of business would feel energizing to build—not just now, but five years from now?
That’s the stuff visions should be made of. And missions too.
Because nobody can beat you at being you.
Why not build your edge around that?
